There's protection from above for entries in this year's Heartland Sculpture Challenge.
After four of the eight pieces in the inaugural challenge 18 months ago were damaged by vandals, the Timaru District Council is in no hurry to see a repeat of the damage.
This time five of the pieces are being displayed at the Evans St entrance to Caroline Bay for a week, and lighting and security cameras installed there should help ensure the art works remain as they were created.
The cameras are the latest technology available and provide 20 times better picture quality than most existing security cameras, according to Allied Alarms' Peter Coulter who was installing the equipment on 17 March 2010. Peter installed the IR sensitive IQeye 755 Day/Night MegaPixel Cameras protected by the Transpac Housing units which was all run through ALNET NetStation, an IP DVR solution for video/sound recording.
The other three entries are at Pleasant Point, Geraldine and Temuka.
As with last time, the public have a chance to vote for their favourite sculpture as does a panel of judges. Public voting closes at noon on Sunday, two hours before the winners are announced at the Art on the Bay event. The winners of both the panel and public choice categories receive $8000.
